July is National Park and Recreation Month, a month of recognition that’s near and dear to tennis players as public parks are the most popular place to play tennis nationwide. This month, we’re highlighting the City of Manhattan Parks & Recreation Department for its plans to turn a well-worn group of courts into an exciting new facility for all to enjoy.

Plans are underway to update the tennis courts at CiCo Park, a 97-acre park in western Manhattan that includes a pool, ball fields, football field and skate park among other amenities. Aaron Stewart, director of parks & recreation for the City of Manhattan, has details on what can be expected come fall 2026.

“We’re replacing three outdated tennis courts with a modern facility featuring eight new courts,” Stewart said. “The centerpiece will be a central pavilion and bleachers for spectators, enhancing the viewing experience. Specifically, four of the northern courts will be equipped with 36- and 60-foot markings to support expanded youth programming, including lessons and tournaments.”

As can be seen from the photos, the CiCo Park courts have seen better days. And better days they will see, as shown in the project rendering. The park’s eight new tennis courts will bring much-desired tennis programming and community engagement to the area. The facility will be used by the Manhattan High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams.

“This project not only aims to upgrade our facilities but also to expand our community outreach through increased youth engagement and competitive opportunities,” Stewart said. “We look forward to sharing further updates as we progress with construction.”
